In 1981, Interim Chief Walt Schuld began his career in law enforcement by serving as a student officer for Santa Rosa Junior College Campus Police obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. His father was a Police Officer and, in 1983, he followed his father’s example by becoming a San Pablo Police Officer graduating from the police academy with top honors. During his tenure, he commanded all divisions within the department and was appointed Police Chief in 2010. As Chief, he was fully engaged in creating a three-pronged approach to public safety by focusing on community engagement, technology and proactive policing. This approach has led to the lowest crime rates in thirty years and one hundred percent homicide clearances during his tenure as Chief. In 2011, he was promoted to Assistant City Manager and Police Chief. He was placed in charge of all external operations for the City, which include oversight of the departments of Police, Public Works and Community Services.
In 2014, Chief Schuld retired from the City of San Pablo as Police Chief, but returned to us in March 2017 as Interim Police Chief for the department. He has returned to the interim position to administer the daily operations and management of the Police Department, new budget development and preparation, and ongoing completion of key technology projects for the Department. A nation-wide executive recruitment for a new Police Chief has begun concurrently with appointment of Chief Schuld. It is anticipated that a professional recruitment of this magnitude will solicit the most qualified candidates for this key command position for our Police Department.
