ELECTION INFORMATION
The Clerk's Office is responsible for the conduct of municipal elections. We provide nomination packets and general guidelines to candidates interested in running for City Council, Treasurer, and City Clerk. This web page is updated in March of even-numbered years. Below is information regarding the current or most recent election.
2024 General Election Information
The next general municipal election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 for three Councilmember seats on San Pablo City Council.
Terms of Office
Council Members are elected at large to staggered four-year terms. The City of San Pablo consolidates its General Municipal Election with the statewide election held in even-numbered years.
City Council, City Treasurer and City Clerk CANDIDATES
Requirements:
To hold an elected office in the City: the person must be:
- a registered voter of the City when nomination papers are issued (Government Code §36502); and
- an elector of the city when he or she assumes office.
An “elector” is a United States citizen, 18 years of age or older and a resident of the election precinct at least 15 days prior to an election (Elections Code § 321).
To register to vote you must be a United States Citizen; 18 years of age on Election Day; not in prison, on parole, serving state prison sentence in a county jail, or serving sentence for a felony; and not found to be mentally incompetent by a court of law.
Campaign Statements
City Council candidates/officeholders/committees who have a controlled committee, or who have raised or spent or will raise or spend $2,000 or more during a calendar year in connection with election to office or holding office, are required to file semi-annual recipient committee campaign statements. The Form 460 is also required if $2,000 or more will be raised or spent during the calendar year at the behest of the officeholder or candidate. Nomination Period
The candidate nomination period for the November 5, 2024 General Municipal Election is opens from July 15, 2024 to August 8, 2024. If an incumbent does not file nomination papers by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2024, the nomination period will be extended until Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

- California Fair Political Practices Commission
The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) enforces California laws related to campaign financing, financial conflicts of interest, and gifts given to public officials and candidates under the Political Reform Act. The FPPC also provides written advice to public agencies, candidates, and officials regarding Political Reform Act requirements. The Registrar of Voters (ROV) is the County Elections Official and conducts all federal, state, county, municipal, school district and special district elections. The ROV is also responsible for voter registration, outreach and education. - State of California Secretary of State Elections Division
The Elections Division of the California Secretary of State oversees all elections within California. The Elections Division certifies voting equipment, ensures election allows and campaign disclosure requirements are enforced, maintains a database of all California registered voters, tracks and certifies ballot initiatives, compiles elections returns, certifies election results, and promotes voter registration and participation.
